Hort. Sci. (Prague), 2010, 37(1):1-5 | DOI: 10.17221/25/2009-HORTSCI
The domestic population of walnut (Juglans regia L.) in Serbia is highly heterogeneous as a result of many centuries of propagation from seed. This paper describes variation observed in this population over the past four decades. The date of budbreak showed a 50-day range, and the date of leaf drop a 32-day range. Average nut weight ranged from 3.3 g to 29.0 g and the kernel percentage from 26.2% to 64.3%. The number of female flowers per inflorescence ranged from 1 to 32 and the number of nuts per cluster from 1 to 15. The majority of Serbian walnut seedlings had inferior traits, although a few genotypes with excellent traits were also found....

Hort. Sci. (Prague), 2010, 37(1):6-13 | DOI: 10.17221/36/2009-HORTSCI
The phenological stages, flower characteristics, shoot growth and flower bud differentiation of sweet cherries, cv. Hongdeng and Van, were investigated in different climatic zones in China, subtropical monsoon climatic zone (Shanghai, 31°14'N, 121°29'E) and temperate climatic zone (Qingdao, 37°09'N, 121°20'E). Sweet cherry trees grown in subtropical monsoon climatic zone had earlier phenological stage and longer blooming duration than those grown in temperate climatic zone. Fruit growth periods of Hongdeng and Van in Qingdao were 38 days and 51 days, respectively, but only 29 days and 45 days in Shanghai. Both cultivars showed more abnormal flowers...
Effects of root pruning on the vegetative growth and fruit quality of Zhanhuadongzao trees

Hort. Sci. (Prague), 2010, 37(1):14-21 | DOI: 10.17221/29/2009-HORTSCI
The effects of root pruning on the vegetative growth and fruit quality of six-year-old Zhanhuadongzao (Ziziphus jujube Mill.) trees were evaluated. Three root pruning treatments (severe, moderate and light degree) were conducted at the distance of 3, 5 and 7 times trunk diameter from trunk on both inter-row sides of the trees, respectively. The results showed that the severe root pruning decreased the length of primary branch by 27.9% and the number of primary branches by 12.1% in contrast to the control of no root pruning. Compared to the control, both severe and moderate root pruning had no apparent effects on nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium...
Relative concentration of Apple mosaic virus coat protein in different parts of apple tree

Hort. Sci. (Prague), 2010, 37(1):22-26 | DOI: 10.17221/39/2009-HORTSCI
The optimal conditions for detecting Apple mosaic virus were assessed by determining relative concentrations of viral coat protein in different tissues (leaves, flower petals, dormant buds, and phloem) in five selected symptomless Apple mosaic virus-infected apple trees of two cultivars at different terms during the vegetation period. Relative concentrations of Apple mosaic viru were calculated as the reciprocal value of the Apple mosaic virus coat protein titer determined by ELISA. The highest relative virus concentration and therefore the highest reliability of virus detection was obtained with young leaves in April before...

Hort. Sci. (Prague), 2010, 37(1):27-33 | DOI: 10.17221/41/2009-HORTSCI
Polyploids were effectively pre-selected in colchicine-treated plants of the desirable brown-leaved cultivar Black Velvet Scarlet F1 of the species Pelargonium × hortorum L.H. Bailey to obtain the basic breeding material for creating new brown-leaved tetraploid cultivars. The green-leaved cultivar Gizela F1 was used for comparison of quantity and quality of response to colchicine treatments. Water solutions of colchicine in the range from 0.1% to 2.5% induced polyploidy in seedlings with treatments repeated each day for 2, 3, 5 or 7 days. Polyploid plants were pre-selected according to their morphological changes and stomata length and density...

Hort. Sci. (Prague), 2010, 37(1):34-37 | DOI: 10.17221/28/2009-HORTSCI
The strawberry tree is a valuable ornamental plant because of its attractive red fruits in the fall and winter, and pinkish-white flowers in fall. Additionally, its fruits are processed into various products such as jam, marmalade, wine and alcohol. Since, propagation of the strawberry tree is difficult. This study aimed to examine the influence of stratification and GA3on breaking seed dormancy and enhancing emergence rate of Arbutus unedo. The influence of seed treatment with GA GA3 or stratification at 4°C was examined on emergence of five genotypes of strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo L.) near the Black Sea...
