A comparison of apple cultivars regarding ethylene production and physico-chemical changes during cold storage

Measurements of titratable acidity, soluble solids, firmness, ethylene production and weight loss were made for five apple cultivars held in cold storage for 100 days. Carbosieve G in the traps of the enrichment column, which has only a moderate affinity for light hydrocarbons, was found to meet the requirements for the optimal thermal desorption of ethylene (130°C for 2 minutes) from the enrichment column to the analytical column. Nutritional quality of Chinese cabbage from integrated culture

The evaluation of nutritional quality of Chinese cabbage and the effects of cultivar, weed incidence, plant density and growing season were observed in integrated cultivation system. Mean contents of analysed compounds were as follows: 6% of dry matter, 10% of crude fibre, (in mg/kg of f.m.): 2,199 mg K, 289 mg Ca, 146 mg Mg, 111 mg Na, and 316 mg of vitamin C. Mean content of nitrates reached the value of 647 mg/kg. The resistance of Chinese asters to Fusarium wilt was tested by artificially inoculating the root systems. A mixture of Fusarium isolates was prepared with a concentration of about 104-109 propagules per litre of the pathogen. 63 cultivars of both domestic and foreign origin were evaluated in the 1st year, 95 in the 2nd year and 89 in the 3rd year. Assessment of pollen viability and germinability in some European chestnut genotypes (Castanea sativa L.)

Pollen viability and germinability in some European chestnut genotypes was assessed in this study. In 10 chestnut genotypes, percentages of pollen viability were generally high and often around or over 80%. The pollen germination percentages of the genotypes were significantly affected by media sucrose concentrations. At optimum sucrose concentrations pollen germination percentages varied between 21.97 and 43.68% in 2004, 3.95 and 31.97% in 2005 and 6.79 and 31.03% in 2006, across all genotypes.
